About to buy a domain name from an American seller and need help?

I am about to buy my very 1st domain name privatly from someone in America, however I dont know how I should be doing this and I dont want to be robbed of my money. Any pointers on how the process is supposed to go? Thanks guys!

  1. If this is a currently registered domain, you need to ensure it is worth what you are paying. Better is to register directly with a domain registrar, even if you have to choose a similar name to the one you want. Most privately sold domains either have a bad internet record, or are total money losers. Do NOT believe any accounts shown by the owner.
  2. Personally I wouldn't buy a domain name from someone, I'd register one for myself properly. That way there can be no ownership dispute, which can be lengthy and costly. UK domain names cost me £6-97 including VAT for 2 years, paying more than that is pointless unless you're a big business buying a domain name which is your trading name. Consider a .co.uk or .me.uk instead.
