If you want to do web design, which software combination would you find essential to learn?

Please tell me which applications you find most useful. Which ones are cool to learn as well, which ones you would consider useless or outdated. If possible, say why.

  1. Learn how to make Flash websites. For image editing use adobe photoshop.
  2. The most useful i find are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver. Each have their own advantages.
  3. It's best if you actually learn HTML, XHTML, and CSS. Only then would I bother with Dreamweaver and other applications. Of course it's easy to make websites with Dreamweaver, but if you don't know how the code works, then you can't easily fix mistakes if something goes wrong...and often, things go wrong. FrontPage is a big pain in the butt. It's so outdated and hard for a lot of people to learn.
  4. Photoshop to design, Dreamweaver for integration. Flash for animation elements. On a more technical less design optic : - Depending of your skills and interest I would also suggest to read on CSS and DHTML. - If you want to go deeper into programmation I suggest Ruby on Rail or PHP with MySQL or PostgreSQL but this is out of the design ... :)
  5. I am not a geek, and I got my first computer at age 70. I use Front Page and I construct my pages with tables which give me a lot of control in placing my material. A few years ago I took a course at the local university (I was the old geezer) in HTML (at night, one semester) which allows me to tinker in a rudimentary way with the code--inserting title, descriptions, keywords, etc. which help the search engines. I designed and built two websites. My wife and I are professional artists. I also write. So the gallery site showing our work is loaded with hundreds of images: www.RyanartDuo.com The other site is a left of center political site with my cartoons and articles: www.UncleSammySays.com I tell you all this because If I can do this, anyone can. Good luck.
