How do i get my domain involved in search engines?

I have a domain name that is registered but when i search for it to see if it works it doesnt show! It is being hosted because if I type the address directly in the http:// it will bring up my site. Does it cost me even more money to have this done? Wha is SEO and does it matter how good my web page is? i only need a basic site to advetise my company.
