What is the relative search benefit of a redirect vs. pointing the new domain name to the same address?

I have an event that has undergone a name change and my domain name is changing to match. There are already many links to the old domain name. Does resolving multiple domain names to the same address dilute the value of the inbound links? Does a redirect (301?) preserve whatever value I am getting from those links. Is there an advantage of one over the other approach?
