can a .com.au domain name hold more weight than a .com domain name in search engines?

I have seen cases where a .com.au domain is appearing higher in search engine listings than the .com variant. I find that quite extraordinary and wondered if anyone else has noticed that? This happens when you search for a specific domain name by its name. Thanks in advance

1. A lot of this depends on your location when performing a search. If your using Google Australia http://www.google.com.au/ Sites that end in a .AU extenstion should have a higher priority, unless other sites such as the .com have more links from .au sites. Basically, it all comes down to links! If you have a .au site with "0" links and a .com with "100" links from .AU sites the .com should rank higher! Let me know if you need more clarification!
