Where do i start to learn web design?

Well, I'm 21 and im trying to figure out what to do with myself for later on career wise. I do love to be on the computer a lot and web design sounds interesting to me. Where should i start though? I dont even know what is used to make a website! Anyone know of some free online guides/tutorials etc etc I could use? any help would be appreciated!
