It seem overwhelming there is so much to learn where to start is the Question? Does anyone know of good web sites that teach a beginner web design,...tutorials and the such..a friend said to me if I want to be good I have to learn about colors and what colors to put on the different types of websites..I didn't really get what he was talking about..he was in a rush to go into details , can anyone explain and direct me to sites that I could learn about this also. Thanks

- There are hundreds of site, but I generally find the best way to learn is by trying to "recreate" an existing site from scratch. Do yourself a big favor and get a cheap webhosting account - something like ucvhost.com is really inexpensive. Always remember to test with a variety of browsers - at least IE 6/7 and Firefox (Safari too, if you have a Mac). The color issues your friend talked about are likely discussion of "web safe" colors. In general, that doesn't matter as much in today's 16-24 bit color world as it did years ago when Macs and PC's had 256 color pallets. That being said, a good understanding of color psychology and color use is always useful in any design capacity - just note the technical limitations of the past really aren't as relevant. IMHO, it's best to learn XHTML/CSS - and always try to find ways to separate content from presentation. In other words, using external stylesheets (CSS) to format the presentation of a well formed XHTML document will make moving towards dynamic driven designs much easier - and will also make site wide changes to appearance much easier as well.
- I'm in the same boat with you and trying to turn web design into a second job. The approach I'm taking is to just find 1 project that I can take as a learning project and take it 1 page at a time and 1 functionality at a time. My learning page is an Infertility Doctors and Clinics Site (http://www.FindInfertilityDocs.com), that I started out adding content to it, next I research search engine optimization, next I added ads to it, next I added amazon products to it, next I added a way for people to sign up to list their information, etc. Each aspect of the site took me a little while to figure out, but by breaking it up into pieces I was able to do search and each individual piece and learn about it, while at the same time implementing it into a live page.
