Should I Rent A Small Office For My Web Design Service?
I work fulltime as a freelance web designer. I'm trying to determine whether it would be worth the money to rent a small office in town for my business. At the moment, I'm only bringing in about $1600-2000 a month...but that number keeps going up the more I advertise. (I'm relatively new to this business) My question is: Will it help to bring in more income if I have an office that people can come to...or should I stick with my home office and save on the rent? I would appreciate advice from fellow web designers in similar situations.

- working as a freelancer is good, but taking into the next level has got advantages like attracting more customers and so. Well, dude may you may get $2000 per month, but is you have office you may quadruple it. RENT THE OFFICE!!!!!!!!!
- Having an office space probably will generate more income. Keep in mind though that rental spaces are not cheap so I would suggest going over your finances before taking the plunge just to make sure you can afford the added expense. If not, then definitely wait. I'm talking from experience when my classmates and I started our own drafting business. We rented a space...500 sq feet for $500 per month. We did this before we actually started making money. 2 months later we were out of business because we couldn't afford the rent + school expenses and also issues with one of the partners.
- I think it would be decidedly (Shawshank) premature... Plus, working from the coffee shop du jour is more fun. These mistakes have been made before by many. I'd get an office when you get a staff of 3 or more. Until then, you're just going to drain another $400+/month + furniture + decorations (any web design company better damn well look stylish and hip to be square). I think buying a boat and taking it out once per summer would be a smarter move. Just me.
- Sounds like business is Good and Growing.. My advice - Stay home and get creative.. I think of my office in terms like this.. I own a website As a designer I can create a web based infrastructure that allows potentential clients to come to me - 24/7/365 - See what I have to offer by providing a portfolio with examples, testimonials, and other credentials online, and then using tools such as video tele/Conferencing and voip to personalize the experience.. If I absolutely must meet the client in person, I bring my laptop, that contains all of the above, and meet them at their office and/or home.. If you have to eventually hire people to help.. it would not take much to include them in the infrastructure, working from home as well. upside -- saves gas and travel time, Downside - you have to create the web based applications and service structure.. Sound good....
