if 100 SEO companies offer optimization service to 1000 companies selling the same "super widget", isn't it logically impossible for them to guarantee (or even ALMOST guarantee) that your "super widget" company can get ranked on the first page of Google for the keyword "super widget" and simultaneously give the exact same guarantee to the other 999 as well?

Again, you are assuming that these 1000 companies with the same "super widget": (1) have businesses located within the same city, state, country--which again, sets them uniquely apart from each other; (2) many of the websites of these 1000 companies are in fact [about 80%] improperly elevated in search rank by use of illegal spamdexed metatags which once discovered and reported to major search engine editors will result in the offending websites being removed forthwith; (3) did we forget that whoever publishes FIRST a website that contains the most relevant SEO metatags, clearly has the advantage over latecomers who have to position themselves in the back of the search listings; and finally, (4) the most prominent high ranking websites are hosted on primary Unix servers with primary http:/ URLS and not www.___ subsets therefore greatly enhancing their search engine rankings. However only the poor quality SEO companies and the scammers will give a guarantee. The professional SEO knows that you can only guarantee that over which you have complete control. Of course no one has any control over the search engine algorithms except the search companies themselves. Since they change/modify their algorithms regularly no one can guarantee where a site will appear for a competitive search term. Good professional SEOs don't waste their time looking for clients either because they have more clients than they can handle and several money making sites (normally affiliate sites) of their own to look after. It depends on how good they are. My seo has been getting top 10 rankings in all the major search engines for 3 years but he was taught by a very good seo himself. If your the top of the top in the seo field then u can keep beating out the amateus everytime.
