Search engine optimization, search term tools?

Hey guys, I made a few websites back in high school. I remember a website that allowed users to look up a few subjects, and it would return statistics on how many people search up similar or related terms. This was a great way to know what kind of words we're best to put in website and keywords/metatag stuff. I found this worked really well. I can't seem to find the service or any similar services... does anyone know where I can find tools like this?

  1. A good free tool to study where your visitors are coming from and what keywords they are using to get your site is Google Analytics. You must set it up and put it in the background of your site in order to track it but it's certainly worth it. If you want to separately look to see stats on terms that you are thinking of targeting, you can use keyword research tools such as KeyCompete or WordTracker.
  2. Use this site. http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/?seed=&adult_filter=remove_offensive&suggest=Hit+Me
  3. Google, the 800-pound gorilla of search engines, will be happy to tell you everything you want to know about your site. For example, using Google Analytics, you can create an extremely accurate profile of visitors. Using the Google Keyword generator, you get keywords that have been used by Google users in the past seven days. All of this stuff is free. Also, Google has a very active webmaster blog that has lots of good information - again, free. I know this sounds like a commercial for the Googlistas but it's not. Google already has too much power over ecommerce conditions and they change the algo like every hour on the hour. So Google isn't necessarily good for the web and it's spreading! It has content now! Even so, you might as well learn from the people who are going to spider you and make or break your site's success. They even offer a feature that identifies indexing problems spiders have discovered on your site. Cool. Don't spend a ton of dough on keyword generators and other metrics analysis. Get it free from Google. They're happy to tell you just what they want. Good luck with the site, Paul Lalley editor@webwordslinger.com
