which sites provide free domain names?

I am interested in a list of sites that provide free domain for users. I understand a number of them provide this and advertise on your site (as a form of payment I guess). I really want to know more..

I think theres the domain .tk which is free, but I heard people make complaints about it. I am not aware of any services that provide free .com or .net domains... But they are usually very cheap and go as low as $4 a year?

Domain names are registered with a 'Registrar' and all require some form of payment. The amount will vary from registrar to registrar and also depending on the top level domain you are registering (ie: .com typically more cost than .org) If you are looking for a free HOSTING site for 'your domain' that you've already registered that's another question :) Some HOSTS will provide FREE domain registration with a HOSTING package, so maybe that is what you are looking for. Perhaps you could do a search to decide which you prefer. Personally I prefer my registrar and my host not be the same company so that I do not have to worry about retaining control of the domain, but that is not necessary for everyone.

You are probably thinking of domain redirections such as .co.nr or .tk, which aren't actual domains. In fact, I like to call them fake domains. Or You're thinking of free domain hosting, in which most of them do have advertising, and other restrictions. There is no way you can get a free domain. You'll have to buy one.
